Have you ever considered an environmental career? On this page are tips and great links to visit so you can learn more!

If you have been surfing our site, you already know that solid waste management districts are here to help people to reduce the amount of waste they make. We use many different methods of accomplishing this goal, so many types of positions exist within our organizations to make it happen.

We recognize that solid waste reduction is only one facet of environmental protection. You might be interested in another environmental field. We will provide what we consider some of the best links and information here for you to make your search easier.

How do I start?

Begin with your own thinking and activities. Here are sites to visit where you can learn how to make a smaller impact on our environment through your daily activities:

Learn as much as you can about current environmental issues (local, United States and international):

Participate in environmental activities that interest you. Does your school have a recycling or earth club? Do people in your community hold outdoor clean-up projects? How about contacting your local elected officials or State or Federal legislators about an issue important to you?

What courses should I take in high school?

Check with your school counselor about prerequisites for environmental studies. If your chosen field is not directly related to environmental protection, contact us for information about how you can be environmentally-minded, no matter what type of career you choose.

How do I choose a college or university?

The Web is a great resource when seeking education guidance. Try these great college searches:

Environmental Scholarship:

Are you seeking funding to help you earn an Environmental Degree? Maybe your goal is not an Environmental Degree, but you are involved and interested in environmental activities. The Wabash County Solid Waste Management District offers a scholarship to Wabash County individuals pursuing a four-year degree in environmental studies from an accredited Indiana college or university. The Scholarship Fund grew out of the District's recognition of the need for qualified environmental professionals and a desire to provide opportunity for local students to receive the training necessary to enter environmental fields.

Scholarship applicants must be current Wabash County residents of two years or more, who will graduate from high school by July of the current school year or who graduated prior to the current school year. One thousand dollars will be provided to the Indiana college or university of the successful student's choice.

The scholarship is held and administered by the Community Foundation of Wabash County. A selection committee from the Foundation will choose the best qualified and most deserving scholarship applicant, using District criteria. Financial need and information gained from all aspects of the application will be considered during the selection process. The scholarship is renewable each school year if the recipient remains eligible.

If interested in receiving this scholarship, and currently a Wabash County senior, contact your school guidance counselor for more details. If a former Wabash County high school graduate, contact the Community Foundation of Wabash County at (260) 982-4824 or visit their Web site at http://www.cfwabash.org/
